CNN —The New York Court of Appeals on Thursday overturned the sex crimes conviction against Harvey Weinstein, the powerful Hollywood producer whose downfall stood as a symbol of the #MeToo movement. Douglas H. Wigdor, an attorney who has represented eight of Weinstein’s accusers, including two of the “prior bad acts” witnesses at his New York criminal trial, criticized the ruling. In addition, three other women testified during the trial as “prior bad acts” witnesses as prosecutors sought to show Weinstein had a pattern of abuse. The use of “prior bad acts” witnesses has increased in recent years with the rise of the #MeToo movement. “Prior bad acts” evidence is one exception to this rule.

New York CNN —Trump Media & Technology Group’s stock is tumbling again after the company announced a massive new influx of shares. The stock had rocketed higher in recent months in anticipation of merging a blank-check acquisition company with Trump’s media business. Anyone who bought Trump Media at the closing high of $66.22 on March 27 has now lost more than half of their money. Why Trump Media stock is so volatileThere are a number of reasons behind the stock’s eye-popping swings. Unless he were to purchase stock in the new public offering, Trump would own just under half of the company’s publicly traded stock after it issues more shares.

You might miss a massive move in Trump Media & Technology Group’s stock price. Trump Media is so turbulent that it makes bitcoin’s volatility look tame. There are many reasons why Trump Media shares have been so volatile, including the fact that the company is inextricably linked to the former president. This dynamic makes it easier for investors to place bullish bets, sending Trump Media shares surging. But that has been trickier with Trump Media, allowing its stock to spike in its early days.

New York CNN —Months after leaving the White House, former President Donald Trump began plotting his return to Wall Street. US regulators have finally given the green light to a controversial merger between Truth Social owner Trump Media & Technology Group and a blank-check company. ‘This is a meme stock’Moreover, there are major questions about the sky-high valuation being placed on this media company. He described that valuation as “crazy” because Trump Media is generating little revenue and burning through cash. Digital World’s share price spiked 88% to 19-month highs on Monday alone. Since Trump’s landslide victory in the Iowa caucuses on January 15, Digital World shares have more than tripled. That in turn drives the share price even higher, creating further losses for short-sellers. Jay Ritter, a finance professor at the University of Florida, expressed shock at the stock spike for Digital World. Leonid meteor shower peaks this weekend

CNN —Up next for end-of-year celestial spectaculars is the Leonid meteor shower, set to produce bright meteors with persistent trains streaking across the night sky. The moon will be 23% full on the night of the shower’s peak, according to the American Meteor Society. Leo is the meteor shower’s radiant, which is the point where the phenomenon appears to originate from, she explained. As the comet travels around the sun, it leaves a trail of rocks and dust that appears as the annual Leonid meteor shower when Earth moves through the debris while on its own orbital path. “Getting out and seeing any meteor shower for the first time is always fun,” she said.

But on special dates scattered throughout the year, skywatchers can catch a multitude of flares as meteor showers burst in the darkness. The next event is the Leonids, which lasts until Dec. 2 but reaches its peak tonight, on Friday, Nov. 17, into the morning of Saturday, Nov. 18. Meteor showers occur when our planet runs into the debris fields left behind by icy comets or rocky asteroids going around the sun. The regularity of orbital mechanics means that any given meteor shower happens at roughly the same time each year, with the changing phases of the bright moon being the main variable affecting their visibility. This year’s show should be a more placid 15 meteors per hour or so, as the Earth hits debris fields released from its parent body, comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle.

The Leonid meteor shower is due to peak between Friday night and the early hours of dawn Saturday. The Leonids could offer up to 15 fireballs an hour, per NASA. AdvertisementThe Leonid meteor shower is peaking tonight and could offer skygazers around the world the chance to see up to 15 fireballs an hour. The viewing conditions should be "quite favorable" as the moon will be in its first quarter, so it is unlikely to outshine the meteors with its glare, the Royal Museums Greenwich said on its website. While NASA states the Leonids usually offer up to 15 fireballs per hour, the Royal Museums Greenwich is slightly less optimistic, as it expects only up to 10 fireballs an hour.

New York CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s social media venture Truth Social is burning cash and piling up losses so rapidly that accountants warn it might not survive unless it soon completes a long-delayed merger, according to corporate filings. Trump Media and Digital World said the filing of the financial documents on Monday mark a key step forward towards finalizing their merger. That merger is key for the survival of Trump Media as it would unlock hundreds of millions of dollars in funding. The SEC filings indicate Trump Media lost $59.1 million in 2021 before posting a net profit of $50.5 million in 2022. Still, Digital World, the blank-check firm seeking to merge with Trump Media, is bullish on the venture.

And as secondary home activity dwindles, some smaller housing-related businesses in leisure hot spots say they are feeling the pinch as well. “Services for existing rentals has grown, but services for larger ticket remodeling work on new vacation rentals has stopped," said Tim Allen, owner of Kopa Home Services, based in Flagstaff, Arizona. Allen has had to decrease unit prices in his separate vacation rental business, Local Vacation Team, to keep occupancy figures above market. For Flagstaff, that figure is 14%, according to data from AirDNA, a short-term rental data provider. "With the acceleration of the creation of vacation rentals during the pandemic, now if visitors are at 1,000, there are 3,000 rentals available,” he said.

Under an updated merger agreement, both parties in the deal will have the opportunity to kill the merger between October 31 and November 21, according to a regulatory filing on Monday. Likewise, Trump Media can terminate the deal for the same reasons over the same window of time. The parties did not explain why the new termination language was added to the merger agreement. Sept 21 (Reuters) - Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, 92, has stepped down as the chairman of Fox Corp (FOXA.O) and News Corp (NWSA.O), ending a more than seven-decade career in which he created an empire spanning from Australia to the United States. The transition cements Lachlan's role as the leader of the media empire, putting to rest questions of succession within the Murdoch family. Robert H. Giles, who oversaw Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage at two newspapers — including reports on the fatal shooting of four antiwar protesters by National Guard troops on the Kent State University campus in Ohio in 1970 — and later served as curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University for more than a decade, died on Aug. 7 in Traverse City, in northern Michigan. The cause of his death, in a hospice facility, was complications of metastatic melanoma, said Ellen Tuttle, a spokeswoman for the Nieman Foundation.
